fast service from discount jungle. easy to output to additional monitor. my kids love it. search web to add code to disable safety feature to watch while driving. Went to crutchfield to get the installation accessories. It works well with ipod video, although i need to encode at a higher definition. For the price, great value and product. Planning to buy another one for my other vehicle.

I received a faulty product but its crappy anyway.1
I received mine and installed. It has good sound even with my car's stock speakers. The screen has very low resolution and on high lightning days is hard to see. The really bad news were that its touch screen is crazy or something. It doesnt work correctly, some commands doesn't work. In ipod mode in order to navigate I push over and over the root botton on the screen and it simply restarts the current song. I hope amazon refunds to me. I buyed this because its lot of features (ipod control) and cause it is cheap too. But take this advice. Stay away for it. In forums very few people talk or know anything about it. It is a ultra low end product. Thats the reason similar products cost double cash. I wrote to manufacturer asking for support 2 weeks ago and still waiting for answer.

Dont waste your time1
great price but u get what your paid, it only last 6 months and then is dead, company support do not respond

its a disposable stereo

quality player with nice options5
The farenhiet DVD player is a very nice unit with good features for the money

Outstanding5
A great product at a great price. Only caution is the wiring diagram. The instruction manual says one thing, the diagram on top of the unit says another. I followed the manual, darn thing wouldn't work. Then I saw the diagram on the unit. Voila', wired it that way and it works great. It's possible being that I was installing on a boat that the ground setup was different.

Plays great.

JVC XV-N44SL Progressive-Scan DVD Player , Silver
From JVC

JVC XV-N44SL introduces a new slim and stylish design for an "all-in-one" player that people are looking for. Not only does it play DVD & CD; it also plays the new CD-R/RW recordable CD formats, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW SVCD, VCD, JPEG and MP3 formats. Don't let the slim design fool you, the XV-N44SL is packed with many exciting features such as Express Play Start, New high-resolution GUI (Graphical User Interface), 3-D Phonic sound, variable and slow search, 6-Step zoom play, digest and strobe play, angle list and resume function. Optical and Coaxial digital audio outputs with Dolby Digital & DTS pass-through are provided for easy connection to any system.

  • Amazon Sales Rank: #53983 in Consumer Electronics
  • Color: Silver
  • Brand: JVC
  • Model: XVN44SL
  • Dimensions: .0" h x .0" w x .0" l, 999.00 pounds

JVC's ultra-slim XVN44SL DVD player is as much about audio playback as video, having been optimized for the high audio sampling frequency of 192 kHz, providing extra-wide dynamic range to realize the benefits of high-spec sources. Even CD playback benefits from higher-bit digital decoding. You want quality and convenience? Try format compatibility with DVD-Video, VCD, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD, JPEG image CD-R, and MP3 CD. But it's definitely no slouch in the video department, offering JVC's digital direct progressive-scanning. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, providing higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The model's 10-bit, 54 MHz video sampling frequency ensures detailed images and clear, pure colors for DVD movies. And, with seven parameters to adjust, the unit's Video Fine Processor (VFP) provides exceptional versatility in fine-tuning images to personal preferences. The player gives a choice of either optical or coaxial digital-audio output for routing Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1-channel surround signals to a compatible audio/video receiver.

A high-resolution onscreen graphical user interface (GUI) allows Windows-like interactive operation with tool bars superimposed onto the TV screen for simple, point-and-click operation. Other conveniences include AV CompuLink (which optimizes performance when using the player in conjunction with other JVC equipment), Quick Start, 1.5x playback with sound, 13-step zoom, and screen fill (which zooms in on a DVD image to eliminate letterbox "bars" on the TV screen).

Excellent bang for the buck!4
PROS:
1) Screen zoom. I love it for collecting widescreen movies for the future, but viewing them full or near-full screen now. Wouldn't want to be without this feature now that I have it.

2) The 1.5x playback speed with audio is great! Especially when watching somewhat boring interviews in the bonus material of a DVD.

3) MP3 playback with on-screen folder and track selection. Works excellent! There is a slight pause between tracks, but that is common with most mp3 playback devices. No FF or RW support though. Playing back standard CD audio doesn't have any on-screen info, but you can FF & RW.

4) Less than half the thickness of my last DVD player.

CONS:
1) The jpeg playback is a nice feature, but my 2 and 3 megapixel images are are re-rendered at a blocky 640x480. You can zoom in on the images but it does not re-render, so you're zooming in on the initially rendered 640x480 image. Unit will not display images wider than 2400 pixels.

ALLEGED ISSUES:
1) "Made in China": So what, everything is made there now. My HP laptop, and my Motorola phone both made in China, and both of excellent durable quality!

2) "Light as a feather": It's a DVD player not an amplifier. Why should it be heavy? They're not going to add ballast to it just to make simpletons happy with it's weight. But ya know what? This unit feels SOLID; and it's not *that* light. Full metal casing except for the front panel. 'nuff said.

3) "Comparable to APEX": Not in the least. Apex is junk and most units won't play the full gamut of DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW. This unit plays them all. VCD and SVCD CD-R's too.

4) "Horrible picture quality and jittering": Not that I can tell. The picture quality is on par with every other DVD player I've ever used, and the only "jittering" you might see is on text when using S-VIDEO--like on EVERY OTHER DVD player. This is a non-unique issue.

5) "Doesn't play some discs": Haven't experienced that.

6) "Video streaking": Just played a fight scene from the Matrix and didn't notice that either.

Plays EVERYTHING!5
This little dvd player is great for two big reasons:

1. CHEAP
2. plays every single disc i've put in it - including stuff that regular players won't play (like vcds or dvds from asia)

the quality of picture is great, and i haven't had any problems with it so far.

Best Buy!5
For those not wanting to spend $300 on multiple DVD players, this little single unit is the proverbial sh*t. Set up took all of 2 minutes and then I was into my first DVD. Gorgeous picture, intuitive functions and a complete remote round out this fine example of a single player unit. Couldn't be happier. Bonus... it plays jpeg picture CD's... which to a digital photo happy family like us, is awesome.

Thanks for posting that this does NOT have a tuner!3
Thank you to all the people posting that this does unit does NOT have a tuner, since Amazon doesn't seem to have that fact anywhere in their product description. I figured that it didn't, based on the price, but having that spelled out clearly in the listings would be pretty useful and save on Amazon having to deal with a bunch of returns from people who needed to have one with a tuner. Philips may be a decent brand, but we don't have a cable or satellite box and hook up our stuff directly to the RF cable from the cable company, so this unit would do us no good whatsoever. If your cable hook up setup is similar, SKIP this unit.

Great DVD/VCR player combo5
Plays all formats flawlessly. Easy to read remote. Troublefree setup. Philips is a Dutch company which produces quality stuff. Beats the price and quality of any Japanese, Taiwanese, Chinese products.

Great value4
This is an excellent value. The description neglects to state this model is not cable ready. There are two solutions.

1. Use a cable converter box.
2. Purchase a (female) coax to (male) RCA converter for a few dollars.

Great for the money4
I had been looking for a portable DVD player but simply did not want one bad enough to spend the $100 - $200 for a decent one. I found the coby 7006 model for only $19.00. I was skepitical due to the price but figured I had 30 days to return it if it turned out to be a dud. Turns out it was anything but a dud. It plays many, many types of media that more expensive models do not play. It has a slew of bells and whistles. In fact, more bells and whistles then my regular high dollar DVD player/recorder. The picture is excellent. All the bells and whistles are very easy to use. No reason to even read the manual it is so simple to figure out. A great full featured remote control does about everything you can imagine, very easily. My only gripe, which is a gripe with many portable DVD players is it does have a rechargeable battery (lasted 3 hours and 20 minutes before needing to be recharged) and it does come with an ac jack for in home use and a DC cord for use with your cars cigarrete lighter. However, you must remove the battery, which requires unscrewing the back panel, if you are going to watch a movie using the ac or dc connections, as if the battery is left in, it will work on the battery as well as charge at the same time, ruining the battery, which is $40 to replace. However, all in all, this is a great portable DVD player. I like it as much or better then some of the $200 models I have looked at and am quite pleased I found it for only $19, although I would pay regular retail if wanted one ASAP and didnt want to wait to find one at a great price.

Typical Cheap Junk from Coby 1
If you know anything about brands, you know that Coby is as cheap as you can get in price and QUALITY. The unit I received did not have its LCD pannel aligned properly so there was a white fuzzy border on the right and bottom edges of screen. The motor is also unusually noisy - so much so that you have to either crank up the volume to high or wear earphones to aviod hearing it. I contacted Customer Service by email a month ago and never heard back. For any service even under waranty, they expect you to send thing back at your expense WITH a check/money order for almost $20 for shipping/handling. I regard this policy as worthless considering the thing isn't even worth $20. One last thing to convince you not to buy - you cannot watch moves using the included AC adapter as this will fry the onboard battery! So you either have to charge the battery in the unit for several hours then operate off the battery only, or remove the battey completely from unit (involves taking unit apart). A joke all around and horrible product. DON'T BUY!

Happy with my Coby4
I got mine at a really good one day price from a local Video store. So far, so good. I'm happy with the performance. However, I kinda agree with the one reviewer on the battery/AC. I'm used to plugging in rather than relying on an internal battery. The battery so far plays thru a 2 hr movie (may have played longer but I recharged after the movie) Unless it plays back to back movies I would prefer AC. I'm using it for travel so time will tell.

Glad I was warned about not running AC and battery together!

  • Dimensions: 5.50" h x 11.50" w x 19.50" l, 7.00 pounds

Sylvania's DVL-700G progressive scan DVD player offers high performance in an affordable package, making it a great addition to your home theater system. The unit supports a host of playback formats, including DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and VCD, along with MP3 and WMA files burned on a CD-R/RW disc. It's also designed to offer the best possible DVD picture thanks to its progressive scan function. Referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, progressive scanning creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, resulting in a sharper, higher resolution image with virtually no motion artifacts. As a result, your DVD movies look terrific when viewed on a 480p-capable HD or HD-ready TV.

The DVL-700G also excels from an audio perspective, with a Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel digital output that hooks up to a compatible A/V receiver and speaker system. The output makes it possible to enjoy full-fledged 3D surround sound--a must when enjoying the latest Hollywood blockbuster. And viewers with traditional stereo receivers will dig the virtual surround function, which simulates 5.1-channel sound through your two-speaker system.

Plus, the DVL-700G DVD player offers playback functions galore, including repeat and random play, 99-track programming, search speeds up to 100x, 10-point bookmarking, and a parental lock function that restricts children's access to off-color material. Connections include component video, S-video, and composite video outputs, along with a single set of analog L/R audio outputs and a coaxial digital output. The DVL-700G measures 17.19 by 2.06 by 8.31 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a 90-day limited warranty.

Cool Product - lots and lots of features in one unit!4
UPDATE:
Alpine's customer service did get in touch with me, and I was able to resolve my Navigation issues...therefore, I would move my rating from 4 to 5 stars - but it won't let me!

Original review:
First let me say that I thoroughly enjoy this Alpine head unit. It really does everything you can imagine from an entertainment / navigation unit.

BTW - I purchased a PMD-B200 portable navigation unit that 'docks' into the IVA-W505 head unit. In addition, I am using the optional USB cable to connect to my 80 GB iPod.

The head unit will play both video and audio from the iPod. Basically, it can play anything that your iPod can play (video, audio, books, TV shows, etc.). In addition the unit can sync to your phone via bluetooth (I happen to have an iPhone) and the phone book syncs every time I get into the car. The 'handsfree' works seamlessly - when someone calls me the audio mutes, and as soon as I am done with the call, the audio (music) comes back on at the level it was prior to the call - and song plays from where it was interrupted by the call.

On the navigation side of things, I like the 3D mode - you can watch points of interest go by on the map, etc etc. The 'sky' on the nav unit changes from day to night...simple, but cool feature.

Supposedly, there are over a million points of interest...to which many in my town seem to be in there...

One note - I haven't been able to figure out what the 'address book' is in the navigation unit - it didn't seem to sync from my phone - and I had to manually input the addresses I wanted in the address book - which is cool I guess, it limited the entries in the book itself.

In summary -

PROS -

-Access to navigation, phone, iPod, DVD/CD all in one unit - VERY COOL!!!

-Interfaces very well with iPod - all iPod functionality is available in head unit (previous head unit only partial iPod functionality, playlist only)

-Screen resolution is very good - which makes movies crystal clear, and helps in day time viewing.

-Many audio and video adjustments - from bass, treble, subwoofer, and high pass filter, to contrast, color, screen height/width etc., etc.

-Just good to have so much functionality in one head unit...

CONS -

-Owners manual might as well not exist, I have a USB cable that doesn't seem to go to anything (it goes with the nav unit, but with no software updates, and no computer interface why include it??)

-Graphic User Interface (GUI) is REALLY funky - you have to learn how to use it - not intuitive at all (and I own 2 Macs, 1 PC, Xbox360) - there are actually two menus, one for the audio / video side and one for the navigation side - and each have their own 'setup' menus etc....

-NO support on the Navigation side of things - Alpine actually isn't releasing updates for the navigation maps, and NAVTEQ (the people who they purchased the maps from send you back to Alpine (NAVTEQ's customer service was quick to respond and outstanding)

Overall, I am EXTREMELY pleased with the performance of the unit, and would recommend it to anyone.

Worked as advertised!5
Finally had the chance to have the Alpine IVA-W505 installed and as advertised, it worked perfectly. Video is very clear with the audio more than sufficient when played with the factory installed audio system in my 2008 Honda Civic. Had a slight problem though with my ipod touch since the unit cannot read the video files. Nonetheless, the audio is crisp and does not skip a beat, thanks to the additional cable (KCE-422i) i purchased, also from Amazon. Over-all, the unit met my expectation.

The BEST 2-din DVD touchscreen on the market5
I have been thru 6 different headunits on my show car in about 3 years and this is BY FAR the best unit I have come across. The menus are easy to navigate and looking for MP3s on the unit is way better than the previous JVC that I had in my car. I don't have a single complaint about the 505 yet, and I recieved the unit from the first shipment to the US.

5 stars +

AWESOME DVD PLAYER YAMAHA S661BL5
This DVD player is a Great Product, Interface is simple to use and intuitive. The manual is easy to read, and the features are great.I purchased Yamaha DVD-S661BL dvd player to replace a low-end Sony model that I have been using for almost 3 year, the picture quality is much better than what I have been used to with the Sony (I'm using component video cable), Audio was very rich and more more crisp and clear than the Sony. There's no button on my reciever (I have a Yamaha Reciever) and dvd player remote to open the DVD tray (but no big deal.) No optical audio out, but I always prefer digital coaxial output.

Superb Picture5
This Yamaha costs a little bit more than some other DVD players, but the picture is well worth the price. Up-converting a 480 line interlaced DVD signal to High Definition formats involves some complex digital signal processing. The chip set used to do this and the skill with which the software is written both matter, so it is not suprising that a more expensive unit will tend to give a better picture.

Important Note: the setup menu has provision for Brightness, Contrast, and Color adjustments. Taking some care to match these settings to personal taste considerably improves the viewing experience.

Note 2: On an up-converting DVD player you can compare the quality of the the video processor to the video processor in your TV. First watch a scence with the HDMI output set to 480. Then set the HDMI output to the resoulution of your TV, and replay the scene. In the first case the TV is doing the up-conversion, and in the second the DVD player is doing the up-converting. This test with a JVC DVD player and Sharp Aquos 720p TV produced no discernable difference. Both give a very good picture. Adding the Yamaha player to the mix, however, produces a noticeable improvement in picture quality. Whoever wrote the software for the Yamaha unit did a fine job.

Yamaha 661 DVD5
Awesome player. Interface is simple to use and intuitive. The manual is easy to read, and the features are great. I bought this unit because I have a Yamaha Reciever and I wanted to use the reciever remote to operate the DVD. I was not disappointed. The slide show feature from a flash drive is great. We know have a 37" (that's the size of our TV) digital frame. The progressive scan is really crisp. There are only 2 drawbacks: you don't get 1080 out unless you use a HDMI cable and there's no button on my reciever remote to open the DVD tray (no big deal.)

I highly reccommend this product

Toshiba SD-1600 DVD Player
From Toshiba

  • Amazon Sales Rank: #50194 in Consumer Electronics
  • Brand: Toshiba
  • Model: SD1600
  • Dimensions: 3.19" h x 16.93" w x 12.01" l, 6.61 pounds

Toshiba's SD-1600 further refines the stellar model for DVD quality pioneered with the company's popular SD-3109 and SD-1200. Among the SD-1600's standout features are composite-video, S-Video, and ColorStream component-video outputs; Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel digital outputs; 10-bit, 27 MHz video digital-to-analog converters; and high-resolution (24 bits, 96 kHz) digital-audio converters.

ColorStream component-video connectors, located on most Toshiba DVD-video players and TVs, send an extremely high-quality signal from the DVD player to the TV. Typical NTSC artifacts--like video noise and dot crawl--are virtually eliminated in this connection method, resulting in a low-noise, high-detail picture with astounding color purity.

For video purists, the SD-1600 also offers PLUGE, a feature granting the player the ability to pass below-black (or blacker-than-black) signals, which in turn lets you accurately set black levels on your monitor--critical in a home theater. This player is also DVD and CD Text compatible, so if you're using a DVD Text- or CD Text-encoded disc, the player will display disc and song titles for your convenience.

A convenient feature called parallel video output lets you connect your Toshiba DVD player via composite-, component-, and/or S-Video outputs and watch simultaneous images from each connected TV or monitor. This is ideal for multiroom applications.

A Very Good DVD Player. Well Worth The Price.5
I made the mistake of purchasing a Samsung player, which basically died within 2 months. While doing research on Amazon for a replacement, I noticed that lots of people had wonderful things to say about the Toshiba brands. So I decided to purchase one and hope for the best. Well I've got nothing but good things to say.

This little player is really light, but don't let that fool you. It has played all my DVDs with perfection, and hasn't failed me yet. The picture is wonderful, and the sound is pretty good as well. A couple of my discs that would freeze or skip on the Samsung player, work just fine on the Toshiba. That was when I realized that I made a good choice. I love the on-screen setup menus, which allow you to see the picture on the movie that you're watching while adjusting the settings. It's a nice little drop down menu from the top of the screen, with very nice icons that are easy to understand. Other players just blank out the picture while the setup menu takes up the entire screen. You can imagine how frustrating it can be when going back and forth repeatedly from the picture and setup screen, while fine tuning the settings.

The Toshiba SD-1600 is a great player to buy if you're new to DVD, or are looking to add a low-cost, reliable system to another room in your home. Toshiba is known for great picture and sound, so you can't go wrong with them. As an added bonus, they've got a good warranty for it. It's good to know that I can get my player repaired for free at a local Toshiba certified service center if anything happens.

solid entry level machine5
This is a very good entry level machine, essentially an upgraded SD1200. Its not too complicated, just insert the disc and work your way through the dvd's menu. You are not paying for the extras like multiple disc play.

Overall, this machine is quiet and reliable. It get s lots of use in my house, and the only complaint is that the remote could be a lot better. However, from a practical standpoint we don't need to do all that much with the remote other than navigate through the dvd menus.

This unit will not be the one to select for a high end system, but if you are looking for a basic entry level unit then look no further

Great DVD Player -- High Quality & Nice Price !5
The Toshiba SD 1600 is a great entry-level DVD player. In terms of picture and sound quality this very affordable unit really delivers. In fact, from the moment I pulled my Toshiba DVD player out of its box, I've experienced 100% satisfaction.

Set up is a cinch. The owner's manual is easy to follow and I had my unit up and running in a matter of minutes. Initially, I hooked up the player using cheap video cables (included in box) and the picture was washed out. I immediately switched to a pair of Monster cables and was blown away by the clarity and definition of the picture (Widescreen movies look especially great when played through this unit). It's certainly worthwhile to fork over a few extra bucks for a pair of quality cables.

Perhaps the most exciting feature of the SD 1600 is the Virtual Surround Sound capability. With a simple click of the remote, an ordinary pair of stereo speakers will produce a lively (and loud) 3-dimensional sound. This feature is a blessing for those (such as myself) who don't yet have the budget, or the time, to shop for an elaborate home theatre sound system.

The remote control is laid-out fairly well and takes only a short time to grow accustomed to. My only complaint is that the remote is not illuminated and is difficult to navigate in the dark. The Fast Forward and Reverse modes are lighting quick --moving along at up to 30 times the speed of the original picture! Those who like to read tiny film credits will love the Zoom feature which greatly enlarges the screen image.

I've been a Toshiba owner for over a year (also have the similar SD 2109)and have never encountered a single problem with the player or any DVD disc. The picture quality and the Virtual Surround Sound are first rate. Overall, I think this is an excellent unit. I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking a quality DVD player at an affordable price.

  • Brand: Panasonic
  • Model: DVD-S47S
  • Dimensions: 2.30" h x 16.90" w x 11.10" l, 5.20 pounds

Break into the world of DVD entertainment with the stylish, powerful--yet affordable--Panasonic DVD-S47S single-disc progressive-scan DVD player. It offers multiformat disc compatibility, enhanced virtual surround sound, as well as built-in decoding for Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound, and a slim profile of just over 2 inches high.

The DVD-S47S plays a variety of audio and video disc formats, including DVD-Audio (two-channel), DVD-Video, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, video CD, audio CD, and CD-R/RW. DVD-Audio discs, the new standard for super high-fidelity sound, provide multiple channel stereo, incredible storage capacity, and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs. This player is also compatible with MP3 and WMA audio files and JPEG image files.

The HighMAT (High-Performance Media Access Technology) feature, codeveloped with Microsoft, is a digital-media standard that provides a dramatically improved method of storing, arranging, and playing back personal digital photo, music, and video collections on recordable discs such as CD-RW media.

Panasonic's Depth Enhancer noise reduction feature only processes an image's background, helping to leave the delicate details of the main subject intact and providing sharp images with incredible depth. The DVD-F87K uses a 54 MHz/10-bit video digital-to-analog converter, which helps to reduce digital artifacts to give you a better picture.

When you play DVD movies encoded with DTS or Dolby Digital soundtracks, the built-in decoder processes all six channels of audio information (left front, right front, center, left-surround, right-surround, and low-frequency effects) without the need for an external decoder, and with the right audio components, lets you enjoy the amazing fidelity of discrete 5.1-channel surround sound. The decoder also allows you to control speaker configuration.

Tech Talk
Progressive scan: Progressive scanning, otherwise known as 480p ("p" for "progressive"), creates a picture signal with double the scan lines of a conventional interlaced picture, 480i ("i" for "interlaced"), to create a noticeably sharper image. Standard DVD players use interlaced scanning to produce a picture. Interlaced scanning combines two fields to generate a picture of 525 scan lines (480 of which are displayed). Your television projects an interlaced image by first scanning the 240 odd-numbered lines of one field (in 1/60th of a second), followed by the 240 even-numbered lines of the other field (in 1/60th of a second). A progressive video processor enables all 525 lines (480 of which are displayed) to be scanned at the exact same time. A television with 480p component inputs completely scans the entire image in 1/60th of a second, so it only takes one field to build one frame of video.

High Quality - Low Cost !5
Only two years ago a player like this would cost $300. Especially with features like DVD Audio & Progressive scan. Now it sells for less than $100.00. For the price you can not beat this player. It has more features and better overall quality than most players in this price range. Believe it or not, at $100, this DVD Player is currently the PANASONIC "top of the line" single disc player. That alone says it all about how far DVD players have come!

The new Panasonic DVD S47s features Advanced Progressive Scan. With a compatible TV, this really makes the video quality much better. I really like the sleek slim profile ,and the clear display. It gives a choice of time elapsed , or time remaining. The DVD players on screen display gives all the information needed for sound and picture settings. For those who don't like letterboxing ,the Panasonic S47 has several zoom features to eliminate the black bars. It worked very well. But it is not a feature I like to use. I tested the S47 on a big screen TV. I compared it to the new $200 JVC 510 DVD player. I tried several different types of dvd movies. The Panasonic had clearly the best quality picture and best features.

The S47 had a very sharp , clear picture using the 'dynamic" picture setting. If you are the type who likes to "tweak" your picture and sound. The S-47 has many choices to choose from. There are individual picture settings for color, sharpness, gamma ,brightness and contrast, noise reduction. They all work well. Once you have the patience to see what settings work best for each DVD. There also also several automatic presets for the picture quality. The one that worked best for me is the Dynamic setting. This setting automatically gives just the right amount of boost to the brightness, contrast,& sharpness.I found that setting worked best with my 35" RCA Television using the S-VIDEO output. Some picture and sounds settings work better than the others. It really depends how you have the DVD Player connected. If you are not the type to play with the advanced features. You could just set the player to the Dynamic setting and sit back and enjoy. Based on Quality and features, this is by far the best DVD player available at this price.

In the back, the DVD-S47S has optical and coaxial digital outputs for Dolby Digital/DTS/PCM ,One set of A/V outputs (composite video, S-video, and 480i/480p component video).

The Advanced Virtual surround sound for enhanced 2-speaker sound worked well using just the televisons speakers. There are also audio remaster settings that really make audio CD's sound better.

Disk compatibility was perfect. It played DVD-Rs,-RWs,+Rs,+RWs, DVD-RAM, DVD-Audio ,CD-R/RWs. It is only one of two DVD players available that plays DVD-RAM disks. It also has the HiMat file compatibility feature, which makes reading digital photo and music files easier. The Panasonic worked fine with all of my digital image files and cd music disks. There's even a very convenient thumbnail browser for viewing JPEG images. The Panasonic DVD S 47 is totally compatible with nearly every recordable disk format and media type. If you want a high quality, low priced player that can play any type of disc.
Then the PANASONIC DVD-S47S is your best choice!

Superior Player5
For under $100 you cannot beat this player. It is superior to the models available at the store for the same price such as the S27 but it also has S video and optical inputs. I tested the S25 on my Panasonic LCD TV after viewing DVDs on my non progressive scan Sony player. I saw differences in all three. The S47 had the clearest picture. You must change the setting to 480P from the defaul 480I. Also you can set the DVD to cinema mode, adjust what type of TV (LCD widescreen for example) and I got a perfect picture. Check it out.

setting the record straight5
Currently, I own a couple Sony DVD players, but I also respect the Panasonic brand a lot. I've owned a lot of electronics by Panasonic and I've been very satisfied. The reviewers that like to use scare tactics in order to get ppl away from buying Panasonic are complete idiots. The fact is, as far as DVD players are concerned Sony & Panasonic are the 2 top brands for fewest repair history according to consumer reports. Panasonic's are generally the better value cuz Sony often likes to overprice their gear. This model was even just rated the #1 overall single disc model (see Dec. 04 issue pg.25). It achieved an overall score in the "excellent" range and their top marks in tests for picture quality & ease of use. It's an incredible value and ppl looking for a quality inexpensive player should definitely consider it.

Savor your movies and music in stylish comfort with jWIN's super-slim JD-VD130 DVD player, which--at under 2 inches tall--handles not just standard DVD-Video discs, but SVCD and most CD formats, too, including JPEG image CD and homemade discs filled with MP3 and WMA music files. If you spend significant time abroad, you'll appreciate the player's selectable PAL-format output and dual-voltage power supply, which permits its use in the U.K. and much of Europe (though please be aware that the player plays only Region 1 and All Region DVDs).

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the JD-VD130 stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

PAL, which stands for "phase alternate line," is the television and video standard in use throughout most of Europe, Hong Kong, and the Middle East. The format produces 625 horizontal lines (compare to NTSC's 525 lines) at a field rate of 50 fields per second, where 2 fields equals one complete frame. Only 576 of these lines are used for picture; the rest supply sync or extra information such as VITC and closed captioning. The player operates on AC 110 or 240V (50/60 Hz) and automatically adjusts its power supply to its input.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. A 96 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converter ensures optimum decoding of all disc formats.

Other features include multi-language, multi-angle, and multi-story abilities (with compatible discs), parent locks, up to 32x fast-forward and review, aspect-ratio control (16:9 or 4:3), and a handy graphical user interface and onscreen display for optimum configuration.

What's in the Box
DVD player, remote control, remote batteries, user's manual, and a stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable.

Works great for a cheap player4
I received this model free from Directv as a thank you for being a customer and thought it was a pretty cheaply made DVD player. However, after trying it out I was surprised how clear the LCD screen was! Axion is actually a leader in LCD screen technology and this one has great resolution for a portable player. I have a Panasonic portable DVD player too and it's screen has a much lower resolution than the Axion...which really shocked me. The battery life for this device is only a couple hours and may not make it until the end of a movie. But the convenience of having a sharp portable LCD screen for testing video scources and testing playback of DVD material is excellent. Not sure if $88.00 is a great price for it...I don't think I'd spend that much on it, but it was certainly a nice gift from Directv.

Great for kids/travel4
We just received this DVD player two days ago (quick shipping!)as a purchase for an upcoming vacation with a 4+ hour plane ride. We have a 4 year old and an 18 month old. We have been borrowing DVD players from friends/family and decided to buy one of our own. We were very happy with the size and durability of the product when we received it. It plays great and can stand up to my 18 month old dragging it around without even skipping the movie! Our only problem now is that we need another one! I didn't give it 5 stars because the color was a little "off" but after using the menu to adjust the color it was not bad. It is also lightweight and small which will be perfect for us traveling with two small children.

Very Pleased5
I thought when I first purchased this that it would be of 'ok' quality and not much functionality. I was WAY WRONG. For what it is this machine is exceptional. The screen resolution is great, the features you get - such as volume control, the remote, and screen brightness make it even better. The sound is pretty good also. For the price I think its perfect.

excellent dvd player5
Just to add my vote, this is an excellent DVD player. I use it with an older Sony LCD tv (XBR1, only goes to 1080i), and compared the picture, using a standard widescreen DVD, with my older Panasonic progressive scan Panasonic dvd player (480p output). The picture with this one is clearly superior.

As others have said, the whole thing reeks quality and attention to detail. A good quality HDMI cable is included, as well as standard video/audio cables in case you need them for troubleshooting. The packaging is a class above the industry.

If you want something for watching standard DVDs with a good HDTV, consider this one or the 981HD model.

Give your Standard-Def DVDs New Life5
Until the HD/Blu-Ray hi-def DVD format war is resolved and the prices of those hi-def players and discs become sane, the Oppo DV-980H is an excellent choice and the price $169 is most reasonable (good quality HDMI cable is included!) I purchased this player directly from Oppo in early August 2007 (Amazon wasn't offering it at the time, so I paid an additional $12 shipping charge.) The upconversion to 1080p is outstanding (HDMI connection required. Fortunately my Sony 40" HDTV has 2 HDMI inputs.) I would say that on a standard def 16:9 DVD the picture quality at 1080p is about 60-70% of what you would get in hi-def. It is NOT hi-def, but it is as close as you can get without paying outrageous prices. It also will play other Region coded DVDs (with an easy hack.) The only issue I have encountered is that some DVDs that are 16:9 letterbox are not upconverted to full screen (the letterbox is constrained to 4:3 pillar box.) Don't know why this is. This happens on older DVD versions of 2001 (menu is full screen, but not the film itself), Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and a 16:9 version of A&E's Nero Wolfe. Other older letterboxed DVDs display just fine. (Is there some coding on the DVD preventing upscaled display? One of Life's DVD Mysteries, I guess.) Completely unrelated to the player's performance is Oppo's impressive packaging of the player. Somebody really cared about quality from the packaging on up. This player performs as advertised (can't ask more than that.)

Addendum Jan 3, 2008:
I purchased new special edition of 2001 and it plays great. Don't know what the issue was with the older release.

Addendum Jan 5, 2008:
It appears the high-def DVD format war is drawing to a close with Warner announcing, conveniently timed to just after the holiday shopping season, exclusive support of Blu-ray. Of course, until Blu-ray hardware and software costs drop substantially, the Oppo is still a good buy.

Excellent Picture Quality5
I have a friend who just picked up this player and we watched a movie on it and it looks fantastic!!! I have an HD DVD player which does a great job of up-converting non-HD DVD movies to 1080p but this seemed a bit more sharp. I've seen cheaper players that do up-conversions but this one struck me as being much better. For me, the slight increase in sharpness isn't worth spending $200 for, but if you don't have anything to up-convert a DVD then this would be an excellent option at a decent price until you do pick up a high definition player.

Not the region-free player it claims to be2
I specifically bought this DVD player because it's advertised as region-free: it should play not only DVDs made in North America, but DVDs from other regions as well. But it doesn't play DVDs from the U.K., even though I carefully followed the instructions for setting the region. It's a nice little player for domestic DVDs -- the controls are easy to use -- but I'm disappointed that it doesn't function as advertised.

EZ Gear player1
This item and goggles wear purchased together. The power cord doesn't stayed plugged into player also the goggles unplugges easily. Didn't have it long and quit playing DVDs. Goggles picture was good while it lasted.

Disappointed1
I purchased this product along with the ezVision glasses. I can not charge the lithium rechargeable battery. The 120V Adapter furnished with the player, supposedly for charging the battery, does not fit properly (snugly) into the player and keeps falling out. Thought I would be eliminating electric cords with a player that operates on a battery. Unfortunately, that only works when you can actually CHARGE THE BATTERY.
